Software tool allows aquaculture concession procedure tracking

In order to streamline the processes associated with geographic information systems (GIS) in the aquaculture sector, the Undersecretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) has developed a tool intended to gather online information on aquaculture concessions status.

It is the application "Map Viewer," which provides access to geographical information on aquaculture concessions, management and exploitation areas for benthic resources, marine coastal areas of aborigines, fishing coves and protected marine areas.

The application can be used from any computer with an Internet browser without the need for special software.

The display allows users to check aquaculture concession procedure status online and other relevant background that before could only be accessed via the Office of Information and Complaints (OIRS) or by traditional mail.

"We have recently built the aquaculture concession information and Suitable Aquaculture Areas (AAA) of the Aysen region, and it is expected that in the second half of 2014 the data are incorporated in the Magallanes region," Subpesca Aquaculture Division chief, José Miguel Burgos, stated in this regard.

Through a scale of colours (green, orange and red) the user can know the processing status of the aquaculture concession application.

The application makes it possible to print the image being displayed on the screen and to extract the information in Excel format. Besides, it is possible to export the data to Google Earth programme.
