Malaysian aquaculture production forecasts to grow 50%

The Malasyan Government expects aquaculture production increases by 50 per cent by 2020 to meet the people's fish-based food demand.

This hope was voiced by the head of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob in the framework of the Malaysian International Seafood Exhibition (MISE) 2014 that was held at the Putra World Trade Centre in Kuala Lumpur, The Nation reported.

In this event, the minister also stated that the world fishing industry had now focused on aquaculture activities and was no longer depending on marine catch.

"So far, we have achieved 20 per cent. So, the remaining 30 per cent can be achieved if all quarters cooperate in efforts to empower the aquaculture industry in the country," the minister pointed out.

And he added: "The focus is on aquaculture activities and no longer merely on marine catch because of several factors, like global warming which has impacted marine life."

News sources explained that under the National Agro-Food Policy (2011-2020), the Government has set an ambitious target of two million tonnes of fish to be produced by the year 2020.

According to Sabri Yaakob, this policy has been put in place to address the issue of food supply in Malaysia and is in line with the effort to develop the country as a high-income nation. He also made it clear that the National Agro-Food Policy would also increase the revenue of farmers as well as agro-entrepreneurs.

Furthermore, Sabri Yaakob stressed the fishing industry contributed 1.3 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP) and 12.5 per cent to the country's agriculture industry.

"Without rapid implementation of sustainable fisheries management practices to meet the ever growing demand, we may actually experience a reduction in seafood availability as we deplete one of the world's most valuable resources," he highlighted.
